Classroom

Management

Our Working Place

Research tells us that, " The amount  of time students actively engaged in learning, contribute strongly to their achievement.  The qmount of time available for learning is determined by instructional and management skills of the theacher." So far my education joureny, I have realized one thing strongly that CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT is the important factor which influnces students' learning. Given this much of importance for classroom management I always wonder why much emphasis is not given on classroom management skills during the teacher certificate course. The moment I entered in this profession I have decided that I must work in this area to be a better teacher. And the result of my extensive work in this area has helped me to achive the best of teaching career,  one can dream of.

The below clip art clearly shows the need of classroom management.

 “Unless students like the teacher, learning does not take place” This is one of the simplest formulas to have learning to take place in classroom. Students do not learn from the teacher, they do not like. In all the schools I worked so far I have worked hard in developing a perfect relationship with my students. This has benefited in making me a better teacher. Once the real CONNECTION with students has been established the job of a teacher to manage the classroom becomes easier. Now the question as ‘How to establish a connection with the students?’ arouses. The obvious answer from me in this regard is simple one and it is, identifying the likings and disliking of students. It has always worked for me. This is in fact one of the biggest secrets of turning a classroom into a happening place.

Essential agreements :

                            In the beginning of the school year I put forward my expectations of the class.  I put them in a creative way like this;

   G reat Group

   R espect

   O bedient

   U nderstanding

   P repared

As my classroom comprises of groups, I everyday these regulations on the board in the beginning of the lessons and they help me immensely in having smooth functioning of my classroom.

By Respect I mean,  Everyone in the classroom must be respected.

By Obedient I mean, Students are supposed to follow the instructions clearly and carry out their tasks.

By Understanding I mean that students must understand the emotions of their colleagues and also academically they need to understand the concepts which are taught. In case they fail to understand, they must make sure that have understood the concepts by asking teacher.

By Prepared I mean, Students must be ready to to learn. They must be prepared with their books, notebooks and other equipments beforehand. The more you are prepared the better learning takes place.

And the Group which will follow all these instructions clearly, will the Great group for the day.

Previously I had another set of regulations and that was;

   T alk quietly

   E veryone is to be respected

   A ctive participation

   M anaging the behavior.

Writing these regulations on the board everyday has created the huge impact on students. And students understand their responsibilities very well. All the schools I have worked in so far, these strategies have worked excellently. As I was writing these instructions every day, one day a student wrote it for me saying,” You always write it on the board so I decided that I would help you by writing on behalf of you” after hearing this, I really felt like I have got the best award ever. This is a clear evidence that students are completely involved in learning process.

Other than this I can also say, carrying out something unexpected in the classrooms has too helped me in having excellent atmosphere in the classrooms.
