Learner Profiles

There is small belief that learning profiles do not exist, or if they do, they have no place in classrooms. However interestingly the truth is that everyone witnesses students learning in different ways.

For example, I am learning about global warming and climate change, I will watch videos, read articles, talk to different people and look over the models that make sense to me. I have better chance of learning when I use combination of these learning modalities rather than using just one. I believe I learn through variety of these ways, so do students. Therefore I always make sure that my lesson planning reflects a variety of ways to offer entry to learning by all students.

I start using IB learning profiles once I complete understand the ways students they learn. Students learning ways are range from simple to complex as they come from various cultural backgrounds. I have had opportunity to interact with the students from various cultural backgrounds in the 10 years. Here is one example of my lesson embracing IB learner profiles;

Thinker

Process:-             Showing a video that gives an overview of the topic.

Thinker, Communicators, open minded

Process :-            Summarize the videos key points in students groups of three or four then share out.

Reflective , Communicators, Inquirers, knowledgeable

Process :-           Students in group are asked to find out the information of the topic in stipulated time and then share                                the findings.

Thinker, knowledgeable, caring

Process :-            Think – pair – share to reinforce student understanding

Risk takers

Process :-             Provide ways to apply content.

Below are my understadings of IB profiles. I always do my best to design my activities as well as lesson stratergies to emrbace following profiles into my lessons.

Above mentioned all profiles make my Science class an exciting place for both myself as well as for my students. My 10 years of experience has shown that these profiles make sure that the developments of an individual is taking place in a right direction. They also assist in developing citizens for future challenges.
